Rank Dough’s Black Friday SEO guide starts with two numbers from five years of Google Trends data. UK searches for “black friday” first reach 10 out of 100 between 26 and 33 days before the day, and they fall 78% the week after it. So your page must be indexed and ranking before the ramp starts, and SEO must sit in the campaign calendar next to paid, email and PR.

TL;DR
SEO belongs in the Black Friday campaign calendar, because every channel creates searches and the demand window is short. In five years of UK Google Trends data, interest in “black friday” started 26 to 33 days before the day and fell 78% in the week after, and Ahrefs puts Smyths Toys’ November 2025 organic traffic at 2.4 times its January to August average. The safest plan is to reuse one recurring URL, get it indexed 6 to 8 weeks ahead, warm it with an email sign-up, and name an owner for failures on the day.

The work behind the numbers, so you can judge them for yourself.
EFFORT
5 years of weekly data, 7 searches
We pulled weekly Google Trends interest for “black friday” in the UK and US and for 6 UK retail brands (October 2021 to October 2026), read Google’s Black Friday guidance and Yoast’s guide in full, and pulled Ahrefs volumes, the US top 3 results, and organic traffic for six retailers (three years for Smyths Toys).
ORIGINALITY
Mechanics, not a checklist
The page reuse, warm-up and failure stories come from my own work at Smyths Toys, where about 80% of sales fell in the last 2.5 months of the year.
SKILL
Written by someone who ran it
Roman Sadowski worked on SEO for Smyths Toys through Black Friday and has run site migrations for Smyths Toys, theaa.ie and ProPlayerTeam.
ACCURACY
What this does not prove
Google Trends shows relative search interest, not traffic or sales, and scales each series to its own peak. Ahrefs traffic is an estimate for each retailer’s whole domain, and its December figures look unreliable. Roman’s own Smyths figures are withheld: all the figures ran into the millions.

Why does SEO belong in the Black Friday marketing mix?
Every Black Friday channel creates searches. Someone sees a Facebook or YouTube ad, walks past a shop window or hears a radio spot, then types “black friday” plus a product or your brand into Google. If your page is not already ranking, a competitor or a deals list gets that sale.
In my experience at Smyths Toys, the window to capture that demand is short: 24 hours, 72 at most. Smyths did about 80% of its sales in the last 2.5 months of the year, and Black Friday was always the busiest day.
| Channel in the plan | What people then search | What your SEO page must have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook and YouTube ads | “black friday” + product + brand | A Black Friday page that is already indexed and linked from the home page |
| Shops, newspapers and radio | Your brand name + “black friday deals” | The same recurring URL, so links and rankings carry over from last year |
| Email and SMS | The deal name or the product | A sign-up page that becomes the sale page on the day |
| PR and “best deals” lists | “best black friday deals for [category]” | Presence in the lists journalists build before the day |

When does Black Friday search demand start and stop?
Five years of Google Trends data show when the demand starts and stops. In the UK, interest in “black friday” first reached 10 out of 100 between 26 and 33 days before Black Friday in every year from 2021 to 2025. In the US it came later, between 19 and 26 days before.
The fall is sharper than the rise. In 2025, UK interest was 4 in the week of 12 October, 16 on 26 October, 40 on 9 November and 72 in Black Friday week. The week after it was 16, a fall of 78%, and by 7 December it was 2.

Figure 2. The 2025 ramp and cliff for “black friday”, next to searches for Smyths Toys. Rendered from Google Trends data, not a screenshot. Click a chart to expand it.
The phrase is also getting less popular. The UK peak fell from 100 in 2021 to 72 in 2025, and the US peak from 100 to 83.
Google Trends scales each series to its own highest week, so this is a change in searches for that exact phrase, not in sales. I have not tested why.

What does the Black Friday SEO timeline look like, week by week?
Black Friday 2026 is on 27 November
The plan below counts back from Black Friday. The dates are for 2026. Smyths Toys started its warm-up 6 to 8 weeks out, and Yoast recommends at least 45 days.
- 8 to 6 weeks before (2 to 16 October 2026): index the page. Create or refresh the recurring URL, link it from the home page and check that Google can crawl it.
- 6 to 4 weeks before (16 to 30 October): warm the page. Send traffic to it from ads, email and social, add internal links from category pages and pitch the deals-list authors.
- 4 weeks to 1 week before (30 October to 20 November): hold the line. UK demand ramps up in this window. Freeze changes to the templates that matter, load test the site and check the index daily.
- Black Friday week (22 to 28 November): sell. Turn the page into the sale page with products and keep a named owner on call.
- After (from 29 November): keep and reuse. Keep the page, move to Christmas gift pages and review the data.
HACKLink the Black Friday page from the home page at least 6 weeks before the day. Google lists linking to the landing page from the home page as a recommended practice because it helps users and Google find the page sooner.

Should you reuse last year’s Black Friday page or build a new one?
Reuse it. Smyths created a set of Black Friday pages once and reused the same pages every year. Those pages already had links and traffic, so they ranked and drew traffic faster than pages on retailers that started from new URLs.
I cannot share the numbers. All the figures ran into the millions.
Google gives the same advice: use a recurring URL, not a new URL for each occurrence of the event. Its example is /sale/black-friday, not /sale/2020/black-friday. Yoast agrees and suggests leaving the year out of the slug, or changing it each year and redirecting the old URL.
Figure 3. Screenshots of Google’s Black Friday guidance and Yoast’s guide, taken 14 October 2026. Click an image to expand it.
My rule, untested: reuse the page when the URL has links and the offer is the same type. Replace the URL only to take a year out of it, and 301 the old one to the new one.
HACKTake the year out of the Black Friday URL. Google’s example is /sale/black-friday, not /sale/2020/black-friday, so the links the page earns this year still count next year.

How do you warm a Black Friday page up before the day?
At Smyths, 6 to 8 weeks before Black Friday the pages carried teaser graphics or animation and an email sign-up box with a line like “be notified first before the big deals”. The pages collected emails, drew traffic and kept every link pointing at the same URL.
On the day we turned the same pages into collection or category pages with products. Nothing had to be indexed from scratch. Traffic and rankings rose fast because the pages were mature, with links already pointing at them, and because we sent traffic to them weeks ahead.
The other retailers did not have that warm-up. This is my experience at one retailer, not a controlled test.
Which searches should you target for Black Friday?
Qualify the target by how competitive it is. Big generic terms are taken: Printful’s 2024 keyword table lists “black friday deals” at 355,000 US searches a month with a difficulty score of 90.
A small brand has a better chance with its own brand and product names plus “black friday”. That is my judgement, not a tested result.
| Search | US searches a month | US difficulty | UK searches a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| black friday landing page | 700 | 0 | 80 |
| black friday marketing strategy | 500 | 7 | 150 |
| black friday seo | 80 | 9 | 100 |
| black friday seo for ecommerce | 50 | n/a | n/a |
| how to boost black friday sales with seo | 50 | n/a | n/a |

| last minute black friday seo | 40 | n/a | n/a |
Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, monthly search volumes and difficulty, US and UK, pulled 13 October 2026. n/a means Ahrefs reported no value.
Read the intent before you chase the volume. On 13 October 2026 the US top 3 for “black friday landing page” were page templates and builders, and for “black friday marketing strategy” they were promotion ideas. Those searchers are marketers, not shoppers.
For “black friday seo” itself, US searches peaked at 257 a month in November 2024 and 189 in November 2025.
Which retailers peak at Black Friday, and which at Christmas?
Not every retailer peaks on Black Friday. We pulled five years of UK brand-search interest for six retailers. Of 30 retailer-years, 20 peaked in December, 9 in Black Friday week and 1 in early November (Smyths Toys in 2022).
| Retailer | Peak week 2023 | Peak week 2024 | Peak week 2025 | Nov and Dec lift, 2022 to 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smyths Toys | 19 Nov (Black Friday week) | 24 Nov (Black Friday week) | 21 Dec | 2.2 to 2.8x |
| Currys | 19 Nov (Black Friday week) | 22 Dec | 21 Dec | 1.5 to 1.8x |
| Argos | 17 Dec | 22 Dec | 21 Dec | 1.4 to 1.5x |
| Amazon | 10 Dec | 15 Dec | 23 Nov (Black Friday week) | 1.1 to 1.3x |
| LEGO | 3 Dec | 22 Dec | 21 Dec | 1.6 to 2.0x |
| John Lewis | 24 Dec | 24 Nov (Black Friday week) | 23 Nov (Black Friday week) | 1.6 to 1.7x |
Source: Google Trends, weekly UK search interest for each brand name, 17 October 2021 to 11 October 2026, pulled 14 October 2026. Peak week is the Sunday that starts the week. Lift is the average November and December interest divided by the average for the other months.
Smyths Toys shows the strongest lift: its November and December interest ran 2.2 to 2.8 times its interest in other months. Amazon shows the weakest at 1.1 to 1.3. Smyths peaked in Black Friday week in 2023 and 2024, and in the week of 21 December in 2025, when brand searches hit 84 against 77 in Black Friday week.

Does organic traffic spike in November too?
Ahrefs estimates organic visits to each retailer’s whole domain, all countries. We pulled 2025 for six retailers, and 2023 to 2025 for Smyths Toys. In 2025, November was the highest month of the year for five of the six.
| Retailer | Jan to Aug average (million visits) | November 2025 (million visits) | November against the average | Highest month of 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smyths Toys | 8.0 | 19.4 | 2.4x | Nov |
| Currys | 8.5 | 14.2 | 1.7x | Nov |
| LEGO | 19.7 | 29.1 | 1.5x | Nov |
| John Lewis | 7.6 | 10.5 | 1.4x | Nov |
| Amazon UK | 77.4 | 89.3 | 1.2x | Nov |
| Argos | 16.4 | 18.4 | 1.1x | May |
Source: Ahrefs Site Explorer, estimated monthly organic traffic, subdomains included, all countries, January to December 2025 (Smyths Toys also 2023 and 2024), pulled 14 October 2026. Domains: smythstoys.com, currys.co.uk, lego.com, johnlewis.com, amazon.co.uk, argos.co.uk. Ahrefs estimates, not company figures.
Smyths Toys shows the biggest November lift again: 2.3 times its January to August average in 2023, 2.2 in 2024 and 2.4 in 2025. Argos is the exception, with November 2025 at 1.1 times its average and its highest month in May.
Figure 5. Estimated monthly organic visits in 2025 for six retailers. Rendered from Ahrefs data, not a screenshot. Click a chart to expand it.
Do not read much into December. Ahrefs shows every retailer dropping sharply in December, and Smyths Toys at 15.5 million in December 2023 but 1.7 million in December 2024. That looks like a data artefact, so I only compare November with the rest of the year.
So brand searches stay high until Christmas, but organic traffic peaks in November. I have not tested why.
Plan for two peaks. For toys, electricals and gifts, the second peak in the last two weeks before Christmas is often as big as Black Friday. That is why the page you warm for Black Friday should turn into a gift page afterwards.
How do you get into the best Black Friday deals lists?
Every year, publishers build lists such as best deals for toys or best deals for televisions in the weeks before Black Friday. People search for those lists, so the retailers on them capture demand your own page cannot. SEO and PR need to work on this together, before the day.
- Find last year’s lists for your category and note the authors.
- Pitch them 4 to 6 weeks ahead with one dated fact and a stable page to link to.
- Keep the same URL every year, so the links from those lists keep counting.
- Track which lists link to you and which only name you.
List and comparison searches lean on third parties, not on your own site, so this is a brand and PR job as much as an SEO job. That is my working rule.
For the fact worth citing, see how we build data reports that earn links. For mentions without links, see unlinked brand mentions.
What technical checks come before Black Friday?
These checks cost little and catch the failures that cost most. Run them 4 weeks before and again the week before.
- Crawlable: Google is not blocked from the URL. Google suggests the URL Inspection tool for this.
- Indexed: the Black Friday page and your top category pages are in the index.
- No stray noindex: check the live templates, not the staging site.
- One clean URL: a self-referencing canonical and a 301 from any old year URL.
- Linked: the page is linked from the home page and from category pages.
- Structured data: test it, then ask Google to recrawl the page. Schema is for Google results only.
- Load: search, category and product pages hold up under a load test.
At Smyths, during a site migration, a noindex tag was left on at go-live and stayed on for 3 days, because the fix waited 2 days in the release queue. The lesson is to agree a fast emergency route before you freeze the site.
Source: Google Search Central for the crawl, recrawl and structured data checks. The migration story is from Roman Sadowski, interview, 12 October 2026.
What breaks on Black Friday itself, and who fixes it in the first hour?
There is always a bandwidth problem on days like this, because everybody is trying to get the deals. At Smyths, several things broke on or near Black Friday over the years.
- A group of Barbie pages dropped out of the index just before Black Friday.
- One year internal search collapsed into blank pages, because the search page depended on an API call and the servers could not cope with the traffic.
Your first hour needs an owner before the day. Agree who watches indexation, who watches server errors and internal search, and who can release a fix without the normal queue. These are my recommendations, not tested results.
HACKAgree the emergency fix route before the freeze, with one named person who can release a fix without the normal queue. At Smyths a noindex fix once waited 2 days in the release queue.
Source: Roman Sadowski, interview, 14 October 2026.
What do you measure in the 72 hours and after?
- Indexation: the Black Friday page and the top category pages, checked in Search Console every few hours in the first 72.
- Demand captured: clicks and impressions for your brand plus “black friday” queries.
- Revenue: organic revenue from analytics, by hour.
- Failures: server errors, blank pages and internal search errors.
- AI answers: run a fixed set of Black Friday prompts and count brand recommendations and citations separately.
Compare year on year by Black Friday week, not by calendar date. Black Friday was 29 November in 2024, 28 November in 2025 and is 27 November in 2026. For AI citations, see how ChatGPT cites websites.
What do you do with the Black Friday page afterwards?
Keep it. Yoast advises keeping holiday pages up, unlinked from the main navigation, and linking to them again in season, rather than deleting them and starting again. Smyths reused the same pages every year, and they kept their links.
Toy and electrical retailers often peak again before Christmas (Figure 4), so turn the page into a Christmas gift page instead of leaving it dead.
Source: Yoast, Black Friday SEO: 10 tips, section on what to do when the holiday season is over, read 14 October 2026.
Where is your team with Black Friday SEO?
Pick the line closest to your team. The matching advice opens below, with the section to read next.
No Black Friday page yet
Create one recurring URL this week, link it from the home page and check Google can crawl it. Google advises creating the page well before the sale.
We have last year's page
Keep the URL. Update the offer, take any year out of the slug and 301 the old URL, then check the page is still indexed.
Marketing runs campaigns without SEO
Ask for an SEO owner in the campaign calendar. List every channel and the search it creates, then check a page catches each one.
We want to be in deals lists
Find last year’s lists for your category, note the authors and pitch them 4 to 6 weeks ahead with one dated fact and a stable page to link to.
Our site struggles under load
Load test search, category and product pages, agree a fast emergency route and name who can release a fix in the first hour.
Black Friday is over
Keep the page, take it out of the main navigation and turn it into a Christmas gift page. Toy and electrical retailers often peak in December.
What do people ask about Black Friday SEO?
When should you start Black Friday SEO?
Six to eight weeks before, which is what we did at Smyths Toys. Yoast recommends at least 45 days. UK interest in black friday first reached 10 out of 100 between 26 and 33 days before the day in each of the last five years.
Should you create a new Black Friday page each year?
No. Google advises a recurring URL, such as /sale/black-friday, not /sale/2020/black-friday. Yoast gives the same advice and suggests leaving the year out of the slug.
How long do you have to capture Black Friday demand?
UK interest in black friday fell from 72 to 16 in the week after Black Friday 2025, and to 2 by 7 December. In my experience at Smyths the peak of the sales window was 24 to 72 hours.
What should you do with the page after Black Friday?
Keep it, take it out of the main navigation and link to it again next season, as Yoast advises. Toy and electrical retailers often peak again before Christmas, so turn it into a gift page first.
Does Black Friday SEO matter for a small brand?
Yes, but aim at your own brand and product names plus black friday, not generic terms. Printful’s 2024 table lists black friday deals at 355,000 US searches a month with a difficulty of 90.
